My computers running slow/crashing

Hey guys lately my computer has been crashing a lot, I think its my HD connection. Sometimes it will crash and I can't get it to boot until I open it and wiggle the HD connection, I have even tried taping the connection to hold better :p

The other issue I am having is super slow loading of ANYTHING my computer used to be so fast, I was always one of the first to load maps but ever since it started crashing I am one of the last. Simply booting up my computer takes ages now and sometimes it freezes when booting up and dies. If I try and load any program it takes forever to load :S

I have tried using Ad-Aware/Spy Bot S&D/Anti Virus/Defrag and anything else I could think of, normally when my computer slows those programs help but now I still can't get it running fast again. I'm debating reformatting any ideas ?

If you suspect it's your HDD connection... have you tried getting a new SATA cable? Check to see if your SATA connectors on your HDD are not damaged (happened to me before). I'm just assuming you are using SATA or SATA II.

Matt, are you talking about your PC or Mac?

Yes I have one of the new SATA cables, thats the problem, they are small and don't have the little locks like the older white ones :S I have that sucker taped in place with electrical tape I don't think it has been coming off anymore... maybe. Beside's being slow my computer keeps freezing or giving me the blue screen of death. :S

Spec: NO! My macbook is the only thing that has NEVER broken down on me for almost 2 years now since I got it. My mac is the only reason I can visit the forums right now. :p

Big N,

If you suspect spyware, try Malware Byte's AntiMalware: MBAM - be sure to get the free version (which doesn't do realprotection, only manual scans), UPDATE IT, and run a scan (I suually start with a quick scan, then do a full if I find anything).

For hard to scrub stains, I use ComboFix: ComboFix - Get it from the BleepingComputer link down the page. Follow the instructions, it will installed the MS Recovery COnsole for you before it does anything.

I'm not 100% it's spyware/malware related. Have you tried running a Chkdsk on the boot volume? If you can boot at all, I'd try that from a command prompt. If you find stuff, do a chkdsk /f to see it helps.

Sounds like hardware problems to me instead of virus or malware. Besides making sure your cables are well connected, you may want to check your HD manufacture's site for some utility programs. I know Western Digital has one. Or you can try HD Tune Pro, it's not a freeware but let you try it for 15 days. Is your system overclocked? Check your cpu and gpu temperatures.

Hi Big N,
test may be on the side of the register. Scan your computer with registry booster and let him do a defragmentation of the registry. otherwise, the most effective method is to reinstall your operating system ...
