Post by fluffy »

Is there something special I have to do to run DC with windows 7. I had my hard drive crap out on me and upgraded to windows 7. Everytime I go to install DCF is says "this programs might not have installed correctly"...

Hmm, I don't remember special settings during the installation itself.

Once installed, definitely running BF1942.EXE itself is best done by right-clicking BF1942.EXE and on the "Compatibility" tab select "Windows XP SP3" and "Run as Administrator" (although I think "as Administrator" is redundant when you already said XP). So that every time you launch BF1942.EXE it will run under those settings.

Note you definitely want to do the "XP SP3" and "as Administrator" part before you start trying to configure your controls profile, video.con and such. Battlefield is old enough that it assumes it can write to the Program Files directory, which isn't going to be true in Windows 7 until you enable the compatibility stuff.

Maybe someone else will remember anything special during install, but I thought that part went straight forward.

Trench nailed it for Win 7 as for PB... Since this is a fresh install do not forget to update your PB and check the enable PB box in the multiplayer screen.

If PB still kicks you after updating it and running your game in "admin" mode , look in your PB folder located here "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\Battlefield 1942\pb\Windows\System32" (Im on 64bit). Inside that folder you will see two files named "PnkBstrA" and "PnkBstrB" , right click and change the permissions to run as "admin" . Im not familiar with Windows 7 but I know that sometimes on XP or Vista you needed to do that in order for PB to run.

I think it was also assumed you're already using everything that is listed here: http://www.ea117dcfanfavorites.com/view ... =62&t=1655

Specifically with regard to the TanksPBUpdate, to work around the fact Battlefield 1942 isn't actually supported by PB any more. Not having installed in a while, if you used only the PB that got installed by the game itself, that could relate to the "working, but now PB kicks me".

Try setting your target to go directly to the EA117 server.

Here .. from the mouth of Specialist....
Specialist wrote:Try this:

Make a shortcut from your battlefield1942.exe on your desktop. Right click, properties. In the 'target box' add this:

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\BF1942.exe" +restart 1 +game "mod type" +joinServer "server IP address:14567"
To make a direct link to the EA 117 server, it should look exactly like this:

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\BF1942.exe" +restart 1 +game DesertCombat +joinServer 8.12.64.130:14567
Let me know if it works.

I'm running Windows 7 with DC and didn't have any real issues. I was getting booted after playing a while or map changes then all I did was set to run program as XP.....

Something sounds vaguely familiar about seeing a crash upon reaching the main menu, but I think that was while I was playing with different video.con settings trying to get the best widescreen experience. Random guess could also be to update video drivers from whatever Windows delivered to whatever your manufacturer has as latest.

Something I realized hadn't been specifically acknowledged but you probably already took care of anyway is that the Windows firewall would need to be told traffic from the Battlefield and PunkBuster programs is to be permitted. Windows /should/ end up putting up one of those "would you like to permit" prompts to add the exception to the firewall rules, though as I recall its something that pops up "in the background" and you don't see it until after you exit Battlefield.

Are you using Windows 7 64-bit or 32-bit? In the System control panel applet (same place you see your "Windows Experience Index" rating) it will tell you 32-bit or 64-bit operating system. I have an aternate machine just for testing that I can go through a re-install on just to make sure nothing else comes to mind, but I would want to do it on the same version of Windows 7 you're using.

There is only a small chance of it being truly helpful, but if nothing else is working out I would be happy to stop by and see if we can convince Windows to show us what exactly the program is crashing in. Since we don't have source code or debugging symbols for any of the game, a definitive conclusion is somewhat unlikely. But it's possible that the crash could point us to something external to the program that we could fix, remove, or at least throw empty beer cans at.

Pretty damn bizarre. I hope it lets us see where the crash is occurring once we get a debugger on it. If you run EVENTVWR.EXE and under "Windows Logs" look at the "Application" event list, does it show an "application terminated unexpectedly"-type event for BF1942.EXE? If it does, maybe there is some more configuration I could have you do to upload a process dump of the BF1942.EXE process from whatever kind of crash is going on.

There are several types of crashes that Windows Error Reporting (WER) won't get a shot at reporting, so if you don't see anything that seems to correlate to when BF1942.EXE crashed, don't sweat it.
