md5tool mismatch pbcl.cfg (len=32)

Post by opus »

Hey guys..

Now it's my turn, I need some help with this one.

Just went back to play some DC, and I get kicked for 2 mins, over and over again.
This is error:

md5tool mismatch /pb/pbcl.cfg (len=32)

I did some searching, but didn't find much on this. Any ideas ?

Just guessing, because I've never seen that error or report before.

Everything I do find about pbcl.cfg suggests its an optional file that would be dynamically created to enable or disable optional features of the Punkbuster client. That its an optional file seems supported by the fact that my Battlefield 1942 Punkbuster installation doesn't even have a pbcl.cfg.

But if that was the case, it also doesn't make sense that the Punkbuster client would be trying to enforce a particular MD5 checksum for the pbcl.cfg file, since the contents of this file would be different from system to system. Which makes me wonder whether the error is actually for some other file besides what's being reported; i.e. the error is actually in response to some file other than pbcl.cfg.

One thought is that maybe it actually means PBClient.con (in "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings" or "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings"), which is the file that normally has just "game.clientPunkBuster 1" in response to selecting the "Enable Punkbuster" checkbox on the game server list screen. Perhaps they could be enforcing a checksum of that file, since it must be set to exactly "game.clientPunkBuster 1" on any client where Punkbuster will be enabled.

See if Windows shows your PBClient.con file size as 32 bytes (which is what the MD5TOOL error is reporting the size of pbcl.cfg is). Mine is only 24 bytes, which fits with the length of "game.clientPunkBuster 1" plus a line terminator character. I assume you could re-create this by just deleting it and then going in-game and re-enabling the "Enable Punkbuster" checkbox on the game server selection screen.

But also look for an actual pbcl.cfg, either in "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\pb" or "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\pb", or maybe in "C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Punkbuster\BF1942\" if you have other/newer Punkbuster games installed in addition to Battlefield 1942. If you have an actual pbcl.cfg, since it seems like an optional file try just renaming it to "pbcl.disabled.cfg" to temporarily get it out of the way and see if that makes the difference.

I do not have other Punkbuster games besides Battlefield 1942, so I'm hesitant to recommend un-installing / re-installing Punkbuster 1.61b and/or TanksPBUpdate or similar, not knowing what effect the older Punkbuster might have on newer games. I'd rather you heard that recommendation from someone else who actually has other Punkbuster games installed and knows of anything to watch out for.

Hey Trench, correct me if I am wrong but the TanksPB installs directly to the BF1942 folder. So if he ran/installed that, there should not be any adverse effects to other PB games and visa versa as I have another PB game and it has its own PB folder/files.

in other words it looks like

C:\program files\EA GAMES\game 1\pb

and then

C:\program files\EA GAMES\OTHER game\pb

each with their own PB subfolder.

This is just food for thought in hopes to help clarify the issue.

Also Opie, you are running DC as administrator .. right?? and Windows Compat mode for XP

Thanks for the input fellas.

To this I may add following:

I haven't changed anything ATALL, never messed around with any PB files or any other for that matter.
Secondly, I've only had this error joining a specific DC server. I will try ours too tonight, to see if it happens in ours aswell.

Yes, compat mode is set, admin rights. all good.

I have BF42, B2, B3, Battlefield4free installed. EACH has their own PB folder. I am gonna try those ideas Trench mentioned, with renaming it temporarily.

Agreed that a lot of game-specific files are going to the game-specific directory. But you also end up with the PNKBSTRA.EXE and PNKBSTRB.EXE services in your common SYSTEM32 or SYSWOW64 directory too, so the ability for collision still seemed possible, and I just didn't want to speak further on something I didn't have direct experience with.

It does seem likely that Punkbuster already handles this gracefully and the newer Punkbuster clients used in other games knows how to co-exist or not collide with the older games. But since Punkbuster issues are not exactly uncommon, I didn't want to assume this wasn't possibly a scenario which did have some kind of installation order dependency or similar.

ok UPDATE!

I'm in OUR server now with Rye, and have NO PROBLEMS.

So the issue I have is specifically with THAT ONE server, "BF.MAXNET.va NO CD KEY" IP: 79.171.120.137

Nothing wrong in OUR server, only that one above ^ So could it be a serverside issue ?

OK I found a fix .... Don't play other servers you dipshit. :o ... Now I know what Sarge feels like.

Good to hear that it was not this server. You do not know how many times I have heard, "It only happens on this server" I will now refer them to this post :D

And understood Trench. I did not know if PB was completely separate for each game or if they shared some files no matter the game.

Interesting. I'm not sure what that issue actually is. If the server name had been advising "NO CD" I think it would have been clear they're running the patched BF1942.EXE, and the MD5 failure might relate to you still having the original non-hacked BF1942.EXE as compared to what's running at the server.

But when they say "NO CD KEY", I think they're probably talking about something different / something I don't understand.

Amongst all of the related posts I've seen, those were the most comprehensive, erudite, and extraordinarily civil ways to inform Opie that he hacks and we ain't gonna take it no more, ever. EVER!

You can specify particular files and the expected md5 values in the pb config to search for. It is most commonly used to find files that shouldn't be there and kick you for having them. The mod of that server may not want folks playing with no CD patches for some reason and listed some of them in his config of files to search for. Just a guess.

Well I'd maybe get rid of the NOCD patch and run with the original disks, see if you can play there without getting kicked.

If you only searched for and deleted that one file, it might or might not work, I don't know.
