Well, once again that didnt work either. Was going good for 2 maps then got kicked for MD5 on end of third map. Trench, when i ran your last update i had 2 options (1. to Install/Re-Install PB serverce, 2. to uninstall/remove PB service). Should I have uninstalled first?

Just the normal Install/Re-install option is all we expected to use. Ostensibly if there were older PunkBuster service-related files on the machine, that option would have updated them. Nothing wrong with going ahead and trying the un-install option now, just in case that helps, since you know the update/re-install approach didn't solve whatever is going on.

My own next step would be what was already suggested, mainly because I have every expectation that a "clean" and Battlefield 1942-only installation actually does work, since that's exactly what I and several others are running. Maybe wait and see if =SBS=Pooped'Em has anything more to suggest trying with the existing configuration before tearing everything off.

Uninstalling all of the Battlefield and PunkBuster games and services and then installing just Battlefield 1942 & it's included PunkBuster (and Tank's PB Update) & DesertCombat gives you that same baseline configuration. So if it /still/ didn't work, we must be looking at some change more related to the Windows machine you're running on. (e.g. Anti-virus or endpoint protection software running, or something else somehow interfering.)

If the clean and Battlefield 1942-only configuration /does/ work, then it seems likely one of the other Battlefield or PunkBuster game configurations must be at issue.

So I did a fresh un/reinstall of the game again. As I was updating PB using poops zipfiles from previous I got this below. Any ideas?

That's completely normal. Remember we made pbgame.htm read-only, so pbsetup is just complaining that it failed to replace it with a newer version.

If you do get any kicks with the clean install, like Trench said, we'd be looking at an issue with your system. When PB requests the md5 hash for a file on your computer, it expects a response in a specific amount of time. There are several possibilities why your client may not respond, or "ignore" the request:
  • 1. PB on the client does not have permission to scan the desired file.
    • You should be logged in as Administrator.
  • 2. PB on the client did not receive the query.
    • Do you still ignore queries if you disable Windows firewall and uninstall all anti-virus software (Microsoft Security Essentials is known to have issues)? Could also be due to a poor connection to the server, but I don't think that's the problem here.
  • 3. PB on the client received the query, and had permission, but did not return the hash in a timely manner. PB may be overwhelmed by other activities, such as spamming an error message (we can catch this in a log file).
    • We can tweak the activeness of the PB client. In your C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\pb folder, make a new file named "pbcl.cfg" and add the following lines to it:

      Code: Select all

      pb_logtofile 1
      pb_sleep 20
Try running the game now and see if you still get kicked. When/if you do, post the contents from pbcl.log at the time of the kick to the forum. You could also try pb_sleep 500 as I've seen before.
  • 4. Hax.
    • Are you running any hacks? Try disabling one hack at a time to identify if any are causing the issue.
As far as I could tell tonight, your PB works and authenticates as it should (3+ times per minute). We'll have to wait and see what your pbcl.log logfile will tell us.

Well, everything was working smoothly for about 3 maps then it came back (Ignoring MD5 queries). How do I make a new file and name it "pbcl.cfg"? I can add a new folder but how do you add a new file?

You can right-click within the folder (just like you would to create a new folder), but instead of selecting "New Folder" you select "New Text Document". This gives you a new file named "New Text Document.txt" in the folder, which you can edit to contain the recommended lines/entries. And then you can rename that new file to "pbcl.cfg".

That last step is sometimes complicated by the fact that Windows defaults to "hide known file extensions" unless you explicitly turn that off in the Windows Explorer folder viewing options. When "hide known file extensions" is enabled, Windows Explorer doesn't show you that there is a ".txt" extension on "New Text Document.txt". And your rename attempt turns that file into "pbcl.cfg.txt" which is not the filename you wanted to create.

There is a pre-made pbcl.cfg file in the attached .ZIP file. Cannot attach the .cfg file directly to this post, since only .ZIP and certain other attachment types are allowed. You could drag the pre-made pbcl.cfg file out of the .ZIP file, and then move the pbcl.cfg into the directory Poopy indicated.

Between each test, tuck your twig and berries between your legs and prance around like a fairy princess in front of the mirror. Since apparently you're too insecure to pit your playing skills against other players, and instead just wave a magic wand in people's faces and then run away, rather than playing.
FTFY.

Did you extract the "pbcl.cfg" file from the zip file?

I opened the .zip file Trench posted and confirmed it has the proper command lines. Maybe you are opening the .zip file instead of the .cfg?

In the meantime, you can run these commands manually in-game. Join the server, open the console ("~" key), type "pb_logtofile 1" then hit enter. You only need to do this once to create the pbcl.log file. Post the contents of this file the next time you get kicked.

At the beginning of each map you can also type "pb_sleep 20", as I believe it resets to the default value (60) after each map change. If that's not working, try running "pb_sleep 500" each map change.

Agreed, the directory that file is in for a CD-based installation is restricted and cannot be modified by normal users. The easiest way to modify that file now is to drag a copy of the file onto your desktop.

(Don't "Move" the existing file to your desktop, else it still won't be editable. Highlight the file, press CTRL-C or select "Copy" from the right-click menu, and then click on your desktop and press CTRL-V or right-click your desktop and select "Paste.)

Once you have a copy on your desktop again, you can edit the file there because you have rights to your desktop. Then "Move" (just drag) the edited file back to the folder it needs to be in. Windows will prompt you for replacing the existing file, and will give you the administrative "shield" confirmation prompt to do it with full permissions such that you'll successfully replace the file.

It's mentioned in the setup documents I've pointed to earlier, but just to confirm since I don't think it's been confirmed in this thread (or since your re-installs), you do have your BF1942.EXE shortcut (whichever one you use to launch DesertCombat) set with "Run as administrator" and "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)" compatibility? It's less of a critical need with the Origin version (but still recommended), but for the CD-based Battlefield 1942 this is a hard requirement. Else the game doesn't have read/write access to the game directory just like you didn't.

Did you get kicked here as well? The "O/S Exception Notice" error is a notorious pb error, usually spamming 10-1000 lines of it's error message before resulting in the ignoring queries kick. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to solve since the cause is not known (to my knowledge) and as you've seen, it appears to occur randomly.
Ninja2014 wrote:Again, kicked by MD5 and at 21:26 and nothing shows on the log after 21:12. ????
The ABSENCE of anything in the log file immediately before each kick tells us that PB is freezing/stopping. In this state, PB is not logging actions or responding to md5tool queries, resulting in a kick not too long afterwards.

Some things to try...

1.
  • In case the problem is the spamming of the error message, and not the error itself, we can try setting PB to ignore it. Try adding 2 lines to your pbcl.cfg file, so that it looks like this (also try using sleep 500 now)

    Code: Select all

    pb_sleep 500
    pb_logtofile 1
    pb_logmd5tool 1
    pb_ignore 1
2.
  • Try setting the PnkBstrA and PnkBstrB services to automatically recover in case of failure.

On Windows 7, open the start bar and type "services.msc", and hit enter. In the window that opens, find PnkBstrA, right-click on it, and select properties. Go to the "Recovery" tab and set all three failure dropdowns to "Restart the Service", then change the service restart time to "0" minutes:
    restartservice.png

To do this for PnkBstrB, you will need to join the server, then alt-tab back to the Services window and perform the steps.
3.
  • Add the following line to your pbcl.cfg file:

    Code: Select all

    pb_system 0
Save and run bf1942. If your game crashes or you get kicked even faster, change this to pb_system 1.
4. Good luck!

Here's a screen shot of what the screen looks like when MD5 kicks in. Vehicles showing on map and driving around with nobody in them. Also, you can see that Kilgore is shooting me but his weapon is on the ground. WTF??? BTW, I've tried everything you've guys have suggested...NOTHING WORKS! I guess a reformat of hard drive is next.

That's pretty FUBAR. Can't picture "connection loss / connection lag" resulting in "player in shooting position but weapon already on ground like you killed him." It would seem like it should be all or nothing; either your game client still thinks he's upright holding his gun, or your game client received the info confirming your hits made him dead. Weird stuff.

Maybe the NSA-ware injected into your machine is interfering with the game. Have you said anything about The President lately on the Internet?

Don't know what you have available, but I'm a big fan of using a new hard drive for such a troubleshooting / rebuild project. That way you can leave your current hard drive in a box unmolested and put it back in if necessary to be right back where you are now without any hassle. The time, hassle and risk of relying on a backup and restore to get back here if necessary is usually worth the $100 or so for a hard drive, if you didn't already have an alternate available.

I'll post another pic when MD5 kicks in and it will show someone sitting inside a vehicle, which isn't there. I've seen that a couple of times before too. I'm lost! I'm just going to reformat the existing hard drive...no buy another. Won't be a biggie as this PC is only used to surf net/play this game. Would be nice when/if someone will be able to figure out the MD5 issue. The world may never know. Thanks Trench/Poop for all the help!

Just FYI, I had this MD5 kick constantly on a couple other servers, but never got kicked for MD5 on EA117 severs. Tried everything to fix it, then finally yesterday we checked the settings on my client for 'connection speed.' Mine was set to 56k-Modem for some weird reason. Changed it back to LAN and the MD5 kicks seem to have went away. Might be something to do with how often the client is set to send updates to pb or what-not depending on those settings, then those settings not jiving with what the server is looking for.

So check those client connection settings and see if that helps any.

Quick question Ninja: When you re-install the game, how do you do it? Are you using origin, original discs, disc images from torrent?

Weird shit does happen with bad installs: http://www.ea117dcfanfavorites.com/view ... =62&t=5343
