Lag/high ping

Post by zanshin1 »

Hiya,

for the past few months i ping up and down from a norm (50-60) to 120 plus (yesterday) and its consistently bad.....I know spikes happen.....

my 7-8 hop is through a gtt.net server....and thats where I have the spikes.....

Is that where this server is through?

199.229.229.133 16ms
89.149.185.85 60 plus

I know if I call comcast they will say "not our issue"

a few have been complaining, but have you tried rebooting your modem? it was so bad for me i had to buy a new modem...if at all possible use hard wire set up as well.! I noticed ever since this new 100 bps set up came out here in Canada as well as you guys the internet has slowed down...welcome to the new age lol

Also try rebooting your system and close down any unneeded programs running in the background...ie skype etc... a quick ctrl-alt-del would tell you what is going on.... try it and wait for trench for real help or just shut off your hack.

I had this problem twice in the last few weeks. First time I just ragequit after 3-4 auto-kicks, second time I had comfort food to calm me while I did some troubleshooting. I tried:

-Flushing DNS "ipconfig /flushdns".
-Verified in router no other major traffic (e.g. porn, movie dls, people stealing wireless, etc.).
-Verified in Wireshark no other UDP traffic that might screw with the bf42 UDP.
-Promised god I would stop watching porn for 1 week.

And the ping spikes persisted. I sat in the in-game server list clicking refresh every 5 seconds and noticed that about every minute, my ping would spike up to 600-700 for about 20 seconds, then return to my normal 100-140. This would correspond to the "3-strikes and auto-kick" when in the server. Finally, I turned off all settings in my router related to UDP/firewall (e.g. UDP flooding protection, SPI firewall), followed by a router reboot. After that, the spikes were gone, so that might have fixed the issue, but turning the firewall back on did not bring the spikes back, so... not confident that was the solution.

In the past few days I've seen several others (supertesla, snipe dog, basrahinsurgant) suffer from the exact same problem: ping exceeds 300 three times, auto-kick, player rejoins, repeat... This makes me think this could be a problem either at the server, or somewhere between. It would be really helpful if anyone experiencing this problem could run this traceroute to the server, and post their results (preferably while you are getting the spikes):

http://tools.pingdom.com/ping/default.a ... &save=true

If we get enough traceroutes, we might be able to determine the common factor between us. Unfortunately, I didn't run the traceroute during my last spike-athon, but my normal ping comes from hop 10:

Hop 9, 130.244.200.106, peer-as3257.avk6.tele2.net 6 ms
Hop 10, 141.136.110.25, xe-10-0-2.dal33.ip4.gtt.net 141 ms

Anyways, that's the end of my rant.

its not our comps.......its the gtt.net servers....im figuring.

thats why if this server was a gtt server maybe they would issue fix order...on their other servers....

comcast is a pain to get someone to do tht.

I think you are correct zanshin.

The problem returned for me tonight, kicked twice for high-ping in the last half-hour, but this time I was ready with tracert in a command prompt:
tracert 8.12.64.130
Tracing route to 8.12.64.130 over a maximum of 30 hops

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms DD-WRT [192.168.1.1]
2 9 ms 8 ms 9 ms 10.204.12.1
3 23 ms 22 ms 20 ms 192-171-63-10.cpe.pppoe.ca [192.171.63.10]
4 24 ms 20 ms 21 ms ae2_6220-bdr01-tor.teksavvy.com [192.171.63.11]
5 23 ms 22 ms 20 ms ae2_2140-bdr03-tor.teksavvy.com [69.196.136.131]
6 21 ms 20 ms 20 ms xe-3-1-1.cr1.tor1.ca.as4436.gtt.net [69.31.143.145]
7 20 ms 21 ms 23 ms ae2-69.tor10.ip4.gtt.net [46.33.80.241]
8 62 ms 65 ms 63 ms xe-2-0-0.dal33.ip4.gtt.net [89.149.185.85]
9 515 ms 506 ms 519 ms ae10-69.cr1.dfw1.ip4.gtt.net [46.33.80.2]
10 518 ms 606 ms 517 ms as20473.xe-5-1-2.cr1.dfw1.us.as4436.gtt.net [69.31.63.238]
11 545 ms 546 ms 541 ms 8.12.64.130

Trace complete.
So there is a massive latency between two routers (xe-2-0-0.dal33.ip4.gtt.net --> ae10-69.cr1.dfw1.ip4.gtt.net) that are in the same city (Dallas), on the same domain (gtt.net), and from supposedly the same ISP (Tinet)... wtf

I would imagine that anyone else having ping problems is also getting routed through the same, piece of poop router. Unfortunately, it seems we are simply left to the mercy of some big chunk of plastic and PCB sitting at 46.33.80.2.......

Sorry, I should have summarized: I need a plane ticket to Dallas and an aluminum baseball bat.

Was it the technical jargon or Canadian English that you didn't understand? Shouldn't be too many differences between our English, although we usually punctuate questions with a "?". All of that technical stuff just means that a router in Dallas is bottlenecking traffic between the EA server and some players, causing the auto-kick apocalypse.

Sorry zanny, but a few guys including myself had to deal with lagg in one form or another, ie: Basra insurgence had lag so bad he couldn't play at all then he called his isp and they fixed it...this is really on your end and it could range from overloaded hub (isp issue) bad wiring outside (isp) to bad modem, use of wifi instead of cable, old PC, virus, internet phone, dl while playing, internet phone issues etc...the only thing i can say is try and eliminate one issues at a time and starting with virus check and anti-malware check and shutting down all other operating programs in the back ground a simple ctl+alt+del check will help. Bitching at your isp provider helps too.

its amazing how my internet sucked bad for years and now that a competitor on my street has fiber optics all of a sudden my external line is admittedly bad....i called my isp and asked them to do or send you a link for a tracer route and it will tell you how many has failed hint it should be zero...they on line can do tests that we as consumers simply don't have access too politely ask for that test if they haven't done it...otherwise move to texas

Reset to my original post..lol.

Is this a gtt server? if so does anyone have a way to contact them?

I will do the leg work if someone has the contact info.

If it were happening on a comcast server it would be easier im a customer and its their server...story over.

Had it happen before.....level3 tech support can take care of it..

Original point was ...that if this is a gtt server you all could get ahold of them since your a customer....Im not.

Thats all.

Yeah, crossing out of Level3 into GTT... doubt you'll ever get anyone to own that problem. At least back with =sBs=SEANY, the slow-down was happening entirely inside of GTT's own networks:
=sBs=SEANY wrote:5 23 ms 22 ms 20 ms ae2_2140-bdr03-tor.teksavvy.com [69.196.136.131]

But when the slow-down occurs when the traffic leaves Level3 to go to another network (as it does in your traceroute), they'll probably both just point fingers. It very well can be Level3's issue in that trace, just as it could be GTT's issue.

I can't give a second opinion on either of the slow hops shown, since my route to the server doesn't converge with either of the traceroutes shown here until the very last router, "as20473.xe-5-1-2.cr1.dfw1.us.as4436.gtt.net". And if I try and ping you guys from my system, it doesn't take me out through any GTT networks to reach you.

Just curious

how does the server list work prior to loading up a game? is its pinging all servers?

sometimes when i go to load up into your server it will show a ping of 80. When I did that trace, it showed 125....and I knew i would have problems and I did.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that this GTT network is just poorly routed, and our traffic is getting queued in overloaded routers (Zan's in Chicago, and mine in Dallas). There is no other excuse for 100 ms, or in my case 500 ms, latency between two routers in the same city (should be 1 ms per 60ish miles).

Now this is a relatively new problem for me (last month or so), and I haven't changed anything on my end, so either GTT changed some of their routing to "improve" performance, or a bunch of porn addicts moved into a neighborhood sharing my route... either way I guess some of us are just unlucky.

It is "pinging", but not in the way PING.EXE or TRACERT.EXE are. Those utilities are sending ICMP messages, and are measuring things based upon a response from the operating system-level TCP/IP stack on the target server, and/or from routers along the path to the target server.

The game, on the other hand, is just sending it's own game-specific communication over UDP, and not ICMP-based management messages. The game is just looking at how quickly the game server is responding to a "/status" query directed to the Battlefield 1942 server itself (not the underlying operating system or TCP/IP stack).

So yeah, if a network assigns a different quality of service to ICMP versus the game traffic, one could be carried with a higher priority than the other. Meaning the lower-priority traffic is among the first to be delayed when the router is under load.

Unrelated to any of the routes we've discussed thus far, but for what it's worth, for some reason today I have a 40ms slowdown leaving Verizon's network to alter.net, which wasn't happening last night:
Tracing route to 8.12.64.130 over a maximum of 30 hops

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms Wireless_Broadband_Router.home [xx.xx.xx.xx]
2 3 ms 4 ms 4 ms L100.DLLSTX-VFTTP-75.verizon-gni.net [xx.xx.xx.xx]
3 7 ms 7 ms 6 ms G0-5-1-3.DLLSTX-LCR-21.verizon-gni.net [130.81.129.42]
4 * * * Request timed out.
5 32 ms 31 ms 32 ms 0.ae1.XL3.CHI13.ALTER.NET [140.222.225.179]
6 33 ms 34 ms 37 ms TenGigE0-6-4-0.GW2.CHI13.ALTER.NET [152.63.66.114]
7 32 ms 32 ms 36 ms tinet-gw.customer.alter.net [152.179.92.6]
8 92 ms 91 ms 92 ms xe-10-0-2.dal33.ip4.gtt.net [141.136.110.25]
9 51 ms 51 ms 52 ms gtt-gw.ip4.gtt.net [173.241.130.138]
10 51 ms 52 ms 54 ms as20473.xe-5-1-2.cr1.dfw1.us.as4436.gtt.net [69.31.63.238]
11 53 ms 51 ms 51 ms 8.12.64.130

Trace complete.
xe-10-0-2.dal33.ip4.gtt.net does ping consistently slower than the rest of them too, but that's not where the overall slowdown really starts. So not "another example of GTT having issues", for what it's worth.
