Game Play shuts down, msg is BF1942.EXE had to close.

Post by COPSUNO »

I recently updated from XP to Win 7 Home, 32bit and did a complete reinstall of BF42 and all the updates. Have been having this problem ever since. I also downloaded the update where you do not need the disk to start the game. Any help appreciated.

Crash to desktop is not too unusual for Windows 7 and later with Battlefield 1942. There are just 10-year-old bugs in the BF1942.EXE which will likely never be addressed.

On Windows 7, your best outcome will happen by right-clicking your BF1942.EXE shortcut, going to the Windows "Compatibility" tab, and selecting "Run with compatibility for: Windows NT 4 Service Pack 5". If you have Windows 8 or later, the best you can select here is "Windows XP Service Pack 3". That doesn't guarantee the problem will "never" happen again, but the results are typically much better / much less frequent.

In either case (Windows 7 or Windows 8 and later), be sure to also enable "Run this program as an administrator" on that same Windows "Compatibility" tab. Neither of these steps were necessary with Windows XP, but are necessary for Windows 7 and later.

Also, instead of a "no-CD only" patch, I recommend using the current post-GameSpy-shutdown BF1942.EXE replacement from Team-Simple. ("Battlefield 1942 GameSpy patch v1.61" installer ("Battlefield 1942 GameSpy patch v1.61.exe").)

Not only does this provide no-CD functionality, but also fixes being able to use the in-game server list, and if you have a wide-screen monitor, allows the in-game "Video" menu to show you wide-screen modes available from your video card driver.

Note you can find each of these steps described in more detail as part of the HOW TO: Use the CD-based Battlefield 1942 game to play on the EA117 server document available under the Desert Combat forum.
