System Issues...

Not sure what happened but for some reason when I boot my desktop (using XP) machine runs super slow. When I open task manager I find a svchost.exe system that is running at 99 per cent...therefore it's basicly dead. I chose to try and delete it and once I do everything works just fine EXCEPT I have no sound. I'm no computer whiz by any means. Is there a simple fix for this? I've played for the past three nights wit h no sound but I'm about to give that up. Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Windows runs multiple different instances of SVCHOST, and each one is assigned a "group" of Windows services to run within that SVCHOST instance. So killing a SVCHOST instance has definitely eliminated services that Windows considers necessary, and isn't any kind of solution.

It sounds like whichever instance of SVCHOST was killed hosted something with a direct or indirect relation to audio support, but that's not likely to be "all this SVCHOST instance was doing." The 100% CPU could have been related to something else the same SVCHOST instance is hosting, completely unrelated to audio.

Non-computer-whiz approach is to try updating all drivers that you can, remove and/or re-install applications that you can, and hope for the best. Just updating to Windows 7 would also be a shotgun approach, likely to solve the issue indirectly by re-installing everything in addition moving to the newer Windows platform.

Computer whiz approach would be to run Microsoft's Process Explorer to view the "Threads" tab of the 100% SVCHOST instance and see which thread(s) are asking for all that CPU. The function shown at the top of those thread stack(s) might provide enough of a clue to help identify the cause. (e.g. Shows the thread actually is in one of your audio driver support DLLs, or is in some other known service-specific DLL, etc.) Maybe even posting a screen shot of what you see there would help.

If that doesn't provide direct clues you can further Google on, then use the "Create Dump" option in Process Explorer on that SVCHOST instance, and upload the dump as well as information confirming which thread(s) Process Explorer was showing as the hot threads before you invoked the dump creation. I'd be happy to take a look at that dump to try and dig out further clues from those threads. Presuming Microsoft still has the debug symbols for Windows XP still online.

I presume you mean Process Monitor didn't run on your XP machine. Interesting. I saw that their web page says "Windows Vista and later", so I tried it on a Windows XP machine here before recommending it. No problem running Process Explorer v16.20 20161118 on Windows XP SP3 32-bit US English here.

My recommendation if you're going to stick with Windows during your upgrade is to go straight for Windows 10.
