Great find Swanny. In some ways I would agree Rye and in others I would say hell no.

Nice find! I don't know.. I've made alot of simliar "photoshopped" pictures like this. No matter how well you do it, and how much you pay attention to details in order to make it LOOK LIKE that time.. you can't. Close but no cigar, nothing beats an orginal. The content of photos like this would be hard to duplicate, and it has a certain charm to it. It immediatly takes me to that era in time, and I love that about old pictures. ;)

The realism, the authenticity is absoutely unique.

Tail number ... I thought it was a P51 but something is throwing me off. Namely the canopy.

this shows you how little i know about this era of planes but man the guns look like they will hit the props...i would certainly be afraid to shoot without crashing afterwards :(

Rye there was nothing to worry about when firing those wing mounted guns (on that plane) but they did make some that were mounted on the fuselage. Those bullets actually went between the blades of the propeller. They were timed by a synchronized gear. Before that they actually experimented with deflectors that would .. well deflect the bullet if it did hit the prop. Obviously the gear worked better.

Here check this out

Its a fire interupter pin I think it was called Nighty. You right about the P51. It one of the first models before the bubble canopy and larger radiator intake below the cockpit. Whats missing is the "USAAF" Go Army! :P   8-)

I did some research on the "Army" plane. It is actually an A-36. And Rye will be glad excited to hear what it was called ... as in the P51 was called the Mustang .. F16 is the Falcon etc etc http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Am ... -36_Apache

As for the USAAF ... they were probably too embarrassed to put anything related to the Army on something that cool :P

Cool to see the mechanism shown. Wonder if they also put deflectors on the prop too just for safety? Seeing the plain wooden prop there just made me think "Well I guess you would learn in a hurry if you had even just a round or two with a slow charge / slow fuse..."

Good question. The ones I have seen do not utilize both. Not saying they never did. I will say if the prop has deflectors on it, it is obvious.
