Probably been around for a while, but I just now saw for the first time Dell's "zero footprint" small form factor computer. Which improves on the traditional small form-factor and all-in-one designs by making the computer portion modularly replaceable, and simply "is the monitor arm."
That's always been my biggest reservation for recommending all-in-ones, despite the advantages they can have for most folks as family and home computers. (Not for high-powered gaming, obviously.) That as soon as anything goes wrong with either the monitor or the computer, you have to send/take all of it for repair; no different than buying a laptop.

Re: Zero footprint
pretty neat. monitor arms have been life changing for me, btw, recommend them to anyone with ergonomic issues, or better, to prevent them.

Re: Zero footprint
Please refer to Blink's "piece of wood stacked on 12 assorted books of various widths with monitor stacked on another 2-4 books on top of said piece of wood" monitor arm.

Re: Zero footprint
Aren't micro homes becoming popular? The only reason I would buy one of these is if I was really short on living space. I agree with the downside of sending the entire unit in for repairs.
We got new computers at work and I was pretty blown away to see a "tower" the size of a woman's wallet show up for me. It is pretty cool how compact they have become.

Re: Zero footprint
That's kind of why I like suggesting all-in-ones for home/family. People who "aren't computer people" have CPU boxes packed tight with cat hair from the floor, bubble gum in all the front vents, and solid notebooks and folders blocking all airflow on all other sides. Having "the computer in the monitor" puts it somewhere that generally they have a greater tendency to "protect" and stays out of harm's way. In addition to having the additional desk space by not having separate components, cords running down, no more of a challenge to moving it than moving the monitor itself, etc.
Speaking of small homes, wife is actually thinking about moving to Maryland for work, and we saw this listing:

We both think it's perfect.

Holy crap Trench! That is what $225k will get you in Baltimore??? That is the coolest house I've seen in awhile!
$225k barely gets you into the ghetto here. Thats still small condo zone money!

Re: Zero footprint
Yeah, the US$225K does seem a little low. Ultimately of no consequence to us, since the job is not going to be near Baltimore, and the commute would not be good. Just one of those "wow, this would be perfect" discoveries based on the house alone.

I think it would be a deal-breaker if it didn't. I better have my hearse-bumper bar, too...

I could watch my wife not having sex with me from three different angles in that bed!
No but seriously that is the gaudiest house I’ve ever seen. It’s like fifty shades of grey meets frat boy raiders fan meets modern styling.

Re: Zero footprint
There is a huge variation across Canada too Trench. In my city, a starter home in a decent area will run you 300k+. In Toronto and Vancouver, there is basically a crisis with a million bucks being common. I have no idea who the hell is filling these cities.
While you guys were tanking in '08, we saw the start of a boom from the energy sector flocking to certain provinces, mine included. Was the worst thing to happen to my city! I'm in one of the cheapest larger cities in the country and you still need two roommates to afford the $1200-1500/mnth rent for a 2 bedroom apartment if you work near minimum wage. Just a decade ago, some of my friends worked part time at minimum wage jobs while upgrading high school courses and they could afford a 1 bedroom apt, a shitbox car, a phone... the basics. You could actually save for a down payment on minimum wage. Many younger people are probably never going to see home ownership here now. Plus, more cash flowing brought more meth, gun crime, and petty crime in general since many already on the poverty line got priced out of living here. I honest to god do not see the benefit to a city growing rapidly.
We tanked about 5 years ago (I myself spent 7 depressing months on my couch), yet housing still climbed for some unbeknown reason.
I love where I live and I'm often very thankful after reading news from the US, but goddamnit it isn't cheap to keep a roof over your head here!

Baltimore?!?
I wouldn’t go there in a million years, but hey if you like the place then that’s what matters.
If you don’t mind me asking.. do you have any kids and have you looked at the school districts around that house?
That was a big thing with my family wherever we moved to, while I was still in grade school.

All seriousness, that healthcare bumps our taxes up. Everybody chips in to help everybody else. But I wouldn't want it any other way, its comforting to know that no matter my job or financial status I will be in and out of a hospital with no bill!
