New EA117 Server access

New EA117 Server access

Postby Trench » Fri Nov 03, 2017 10:17 pm

In response to vulnerabilities that were being experienced
with our EA117 Desert Combat server, we have setup a new server
that provides us with necessary controls to help mitigate the problem.

To begin playing on the new server, do the following:

  • In the Battlefield 1942 "Multiplayer" menu, use the "Update" button to retrieve an updated list of game servers.
  • In the updated list, you will see a new server named " to connect".
  • Simply go ahead and try to connect to that server. If you have played on our server before, you will probably not need to go to the page first.
If you're able to connect to the new server, great!
Stop reading and go play!
You can come back and read the rest of this crap later!

If you can see the new server in the list
but you cannot connect,
then come back here and keep reading...

The new server is setup like this: By default, 100% of all computers are blocked from connecting to the EA117 Desert Combat game server. Specifically, by default no one's public IP addresses have been permitted to connect the new game server.

But then, to make things easier for our regular players, we went back through the player logs for 2017. And we collected the IP addresses of all the regular players who had connected to the server during that time. And we have specifically allowed only those specific addresses to connect to this new server.

So everyone who has played more than just once or twice during 2017 should already be approved and able to join the new EA117 Desert Combat server, if you are still playing from the same public IP address as you were before.

If you are unable to join the server, it's possibly because you're playing from a different IP address than you've played from in the past. Or maybe your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has changed your public IP address without your knowledge.

To request that EA117 update our server with your new IP address
so that you can play on the EA117 Desert Combat server, do the following:

  • Determine what your current public IP address is now. This is not the IP address literally assigned to your local computer, but rather is the IP address assigned by your ISP to your modem or gateway used for connecting to the Internet. The easiest way to find this address is to visit a public web page that shows your public IP address, such as which shows "Your IP address is:".
  • Send Trench a Private Message telling us your current public IP address. To send a Private Message, you will have to be a member of the forums. So if you have not already joined the forums, you will need to do that now.
  • In addition to the public IP address, tell us the player name you normally play with on the server, and what your previous public IP address was, if you know. Be specific and provide as much information as you can. Incomplete or vague information will just lead to delays and more questions while we investigate whom exactly is requesting access.

Once we're able to verify that you're a new player we want connecting to our server,
or that you're an existing player for whom the public IP address has changed,
we will update your access so that you can connect to the EA117 Desert Combat server.
Once updated, you will continue connecting to and using the server normally,
at least unless or until your public IP address changes again.

This is what it has come to, at least for now, for us to prevent malicious players from crashing our Battlefield 1942 Desert Combat server in the future. To play on the EA117 Desert Combat server, we will have to know ahead of time and "approve" the public IP address(es) that you are expecting to play from.

That doesn't mean we will always be 100% successful in keeping malicious players from being able to connect to the server. But in addition to making it harder for malicious players to be connected in the first place, it does provide a clear remedy for how to remove them. Because we will be simply revoking the "approval" for whichever IP address(es) had previously been approved for that player to play on.
