Is there a manual with controls and stuff?

Also, are the upgrades pay only or can you earn them in-game with experience?

How does the play4free crap fit in with the release, if at all?

1. No manual yet but I'm sure it will be available pretty soon. You can also look at the controls in game for info on how to use once the game is released.

2. The upgrades will be based on your rank so you will be able to unlock them with the in-game experience.

3. It doesn't, they are just using the release to promote the game.

All the P4F maps are the BF2 maps I think - Oman and a few others.

I wish I had gotten excited about this earlier, I could have gotten you guys interested in BF2 with the Project Reality mod.
