EA discontinues PB support for BF1942
EA discontinues PB support for BF1942
On Feb 3, 2010, EA quietly discontinued PunkBuster support for BF1942. We recently looked for BF1942 support on Evenbalance and could not find the pages. PBsetup.exe, on a fresh install, does not list BF1942. We sent a ticket to Evenbalance and were told that EA has discontinued support for BF1942. A ticket has been sent to EA to confirm, and to see if there is anything we can do to continue support for the game. No response has been received, but it was only sent earlier today.
What does this mean to the average player? If you're playing and you're not having issues with PB, it doesn't mean anything...yet. If you're a new player, or an older player who has had to reinstall on a freshly formatted hard drive, you will have much difficulty trying to get past the ubiquitous PunkBuster failure gray text.
Swanny or Specialist, please contact me as we have come up with a fix for this...at least until EA/PB make another move. We will share the response we get from EA when they respond to the ticket.

Howdy fellas. I found that out after trying to setup DC on my new system. It was coughing and gagging with PB errors, but last night I installed the BF:BC2 demo and now PB is working. No ideas as to why other than it took the demo install to get the services running.

I think one of "us" posted a link to his personal server in that thread I made "How to from a fresh install" where he has ALL files, even PB,
it's at the bottom of the first post on that thread.
Just checked, here's the link for PB hosted on his website! Epic win!

PBSetup no longer has an option for 1942.

This isn't an "us" vs "them" issue, this is affecting all of BF1942, and will affect the overall life of this game. We have been visiting clan and community friends just to spread the word that there is a fix for this, and you won't lose players if they need to reinstall, or if someone new comes around. Our intent is to provide overall support for the game, so you and others can continue to play in your favorite servers, with your friends, for as long as you can.

Re: EA discontinues PB support for BF1942
I think everyone needs to just relax for a minute. I'm not sure that clients updating for BFV is the right answer - if a client gets a version that is newer than the server's (but still a mismatch) are they going to get kicked? As it is, on the hosted server, I only have one option to update PB. I assume they are using the default method to update, so unless we manually update the server's htm files, it's not going to get updated. Also, that seems to mean that everyone who currently plays MUST manually update or they will get kicked.
It's quite possible we just stay at the last known good version of 1942 PB that Even Balance put out and continue on with that. It means we'll be relying more on MD5 hashes and screenshots, but the greatest number of players will be able to play without having to figure out what the hell is going on.
We're going to end up with people having different versions and freaking out because their games don't work anymore.

Re: EA discontinues PB support for BF1942
The setup using BFV was to get the A, B and K services on, then pbweb was to update them to current 1942. Evenbalance shut down the pbweb files, so this no longer works.
What we have found now is a much simpler fix, basically (ONLY for new players or reinstalls that do not have BF1942 in the pbsetup list) run pbsetup, let it update, then find a pbgame.htm that already has BF1942 in the list and copy that over your own. That has been working. We have furnished a pbgame.htm, you could furnish one of your own as well.
However...If your PB is running fine, don't mess with it.

What is the motivation? Is this a sneaky way to push people on to newer games?
