It has to do with the age of the game, maps, and the general memberbase of the game.
Young kids are attracted to the new and more "impressive" games such as, BF4, COD, etc..
What they don't realize that the gameplay of older games, (like bf42) has excellent gameplay.
New games = All about graphics
Older games = Gameplay
That's my personal opinion.
Ofcourse you can spice up the rotations, but I think it would have a very little impact. The game is old, the ones stickin' with it are old. (no ofense intended).

Perhaps a cursory review of which maps have the most across consistent times in the evening will show what truly are "Fan Favorites."

I am also part of the Moongamers community as Senior Admin, and through that position; I have launched several projects, which is currently under development.
1. Release a series of "Handbooks", that in depth explains each weapon, damage, range, viecles, map, strategy, tactics etc.
2. CO42 (Class Of 42). A basic school of education. Some of the best we could find in the 42 community will teach classes of their individual expertise, Air, Ground, Arty, Infantry etc.
The hope is to gather more people, teach them, improve the overall gameplay, competition, and finally increasing the memberbase. Especially with origin in the picture, there is a real chance of achieving this.
Ofcourse with an increased memberbase in 42, there is a chance of the same in DC. Some are likely to look for mods, or new interesting ways of playing the game. That's where we come in.
Something simliar could be done with DC.. Just an idea..
But no, it will never be the same as 5 or 8 years ago. Time has moved on, and so have alot of the players.
I have tried playing BF2, BF3 and BF4. It bores me, it's idiot proof. Anybody can jump into a plane or helo these days, and fly it fairly. The games of these series are impressive with their new functions, achievements, graphcis and supported battlelogs. But to me, the gameplay of 42 and mod DC is unique and outstanding. It's not about stats, medals, or a billion functions. It's easy to get into, basic, fun, and more skillbased from my point of perspective. You have to practice, practice and practice to get better. Not unlock features or add ons.
I knew a few guys in TLB, that practiced a certain thing for years. They finally mastered it, and their skills came to light in the games at night. It was a pleasure to witness that development in a player.
If anyone wants my copy of BF3, just holla.
