Re: The Karate Kid
What about ur Avatar review?
Re: The Karate Kid
Tight Will Smith's son, I wonder if daddy had anything to do with him getting that role. And I can see Jackie Chan as Mr. Miyagi (except he's a younger version) I love Karate Kid
Re: The Karate Kid
Will be interestin to see how it stack's up against the original, an if there's a sequal ...

Re: The Karate Kid
2nd trailer just came out.
Re: The Karate Kid
There was something that was very appealing about the original...(not the original sequel)
It was a story about overcoming a perceived weakness...a triumph for the underdog...facing your demons, and the good guy getting the girl in the end.
The director, of the original Karate Kid, also directed Rocky. You can easily see the influence of Rocky in this film.
Now on to the new release...its ok to re-do an old film, or story...Usually, the new will fall short of the original, but hey, the movies are never as good as the books either.
The big difference that I see when comparing the new to the old is this factor of age. Listen, Will Smith is co-director in this film...of course he is going to get his kid the role...all fine and good BUT...the kid is only 11...just turned eleven, in fact.
In the original, the lead character "Daniel Larusso" (Ralph Macchio) was a High School Senior. The storyline of "winning the girl" was much more believable and was one of the key components in successfully reaching its target audience. The other, of course, was the overwhelming interest in Kung Fu, thanks to David Carradine.
This idea of a ten year old (the age of the character) winning the affection of a girl is indicative of today's emphasis on sexuality at younger and younger ages. Look at their target audience now...there isn't as much fascination with Kung Fu today as there was in the 80's...but there is with sexuality. Personally, I think the character is too young, and Will Smith is not looking out for his son's best interest here.
The movie will do well, I'm sure...and, I'm not over-thinking this and making much ado about nothing...I'm just saying that it is always interesting to compare originals with new releases....
The new Karate Kid doesn't interest me...I won't spend the money.
